The ‘free’ food group includes foods and drinks that provide very little energy, so they can be consumed as often as desired.

Some examples of free foods include coffee or tea made with minimal milk and no sugar, artificially sweetened soft drinks and seasonings such as herbs and spices. Sugar and seasonings such as sweet chilli sauce are part of the condiments food group, which is different from the free foods group because condiments provide greater amounts of energy.
